I study how technology shapes people and communities, and I work to guide law and policy toward more just and thoughtful outcomes.

About Me

Headshot of Jasmine McNealy wearing blue glasses representing her public interest technology leadership.

I am an attorney, critical public interest technologist, and social scientist who studies the relationship between media, technology, and society.

My work looks closely at how information is collected, shared, and used, and how these practices shape the lives of people and communities that often have the least control over the systems affecting them.

My path into this work is interdisciplinary at its core. I hold a PhD in Mass Communication and a JD from the University of Florida, a MEd in Measurement, Evaluation, Statistics, and Assessment from the University of Illinois Chicago, and a BS in Journalism and Afro American Studies from the University of Wisconsin.

I serve as a tenured professor at the University of Florida and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. I have also served as a Senior Fellow in Tech Policy with the Mozilla Foundation and held various research and visiting roles.

Today my research centers on privacy, surveillance, technological ecosystems, and data governance. I am interested in how data driven systems operate and how they shape opportunities and harms.

Through writing, teaching, public scholarship, and partnership with organizations, I focus on bringing clarity, fairness, and community centered thinking to conversations about technology and policy.

Where research meets real-world change

I founded

The Alveary logo representing collaborative research and public interest technology initiatives.

to support organizations that are working with emerging media and technology and want to understand their social impact.

The firm brings my scholarly work on privacy, data governance, and technological ecosystems into practical settings where organizations are making decisions that affect communities.

The Alveary specializes in research, system review, and strategic guidance. I collaborate with teams to assess their data practices, evaluate risks, and develop approaches that are people centered and ethically grounded.

The work ranges from advising government agencies and nonprofits to partnering with tech companies and startups that want to build more trustworthy and transparent systems.

At its core, The Alveary is committed to helping organizations think more deeply about their responsibilities to the communities they serve.

The goal is to support decision making that aligns with values of fairness, accountability, and care.
